Who Qualifies

To qualify for Portugal's remote worker visa, U.S. citizens must:

• Earn at least €3,480/month (4× Portuguese minimum wage)
• Work remotely for a company or clients outside Portugal
• Provide a clean FBI background check
• Have a valid U.S. passport (3–6+ months remaining)
• Hold health insurance covering medical care and repatriation in the Schengen Area

Document Checklist & Apostille Requirements

• Passport copy — Notarized copy of valid U.S. passport. No apostille.
• Visa application form — Completed and signed. No apostille.
• 2 passport photos — Standard size, white background. No apostille.
• Proof of U.S. address — Driver's license, utility bill, or lease. No apostille.
• Travel health insurance — Must cover medical + repatriation in EU. No apostille.
• FBI background check — Issued within 90 days. Federal apostille required.
• Proof of income — Contracts, pay stubs, bank statements. No apostille.
• IRS tax residency certificate — Form 6166. Federal apostille required.
• Personal motivation letter — Explaining your move. No apostille.
• Portugal lease or host letter — Accommodation proof. Host letter must be notarized in Portugal.
• Marriage / birth certificates — For family reunification. State apostille required.

Apostille Timeline

• FBI report apostille — 4–6 weeks via U.S. Dept. of State (we cut this to 2–3 weeks)
• IRS tax certificate apostille — 4–6 weeks
• Vital records (state-level) — 1–2 weeks

How to Apply

1. Gather documents — Start early with FBI and IRS paperwork
2. Get apostilles — We handle federal and state processing
3. Schedule an appointment with the correct Portuguese Consulate via VFS Global
4. Submit application in person with all required documents
5. Pay fees — ~$124 visa + ~$44 VFS service fee
6. Wait for processing — 30–60 days typical
7. Receive visa and book travel
8. Residency path only — Attend AIMA appointment in Portugal to receive residence card
